Final Project - Culture

The theme for this final project is culture. Our group had decided to create a storybook for children age 9-12. We are given different roles in this project and I’m selected to be the illustrator. When I think of culture, I only have Singapore context in mind therefore I can only think of Chinese New Year, Hari Raya, Deepavali and the different races in Singapore. When we asked to propose our own storyline, I came out with this: one non-Chinese kid follows his Chinese friend on Chinese New Year. During the process, we can try to list down the different things that happen in Chinese New Year.

After some discussion with the group mates, we decided to choose this storyline instead: There is this child who dislikes Chinese New Year. On the Eve of Chinese New Year, his grandma gives him a beautiful Jade. This Jade has magical powers and it brought the child back to the olden times. He met the Twelve Zodiac. That is the Year of Tiger but the Tiger is missing!!! Therefore the eleven Zodiac animals are very anxious since the Chinese New Year is coming. The Tiger must be come back on time or else there will be no Chinese New Year that year because the "NIAN" monster will come back and attack the villagers. The child had a great and funny adventure together with the eleven Zodiacs in finding/saving the Tiger. Along the way, the child grew to understand the meaning of Chinese New Year better.

We came out with the following rough storyboard and rough initial sketches:

Since I'm the illustrator, I started my part on drawing the boy, the mother and the grandma. Below are the prototype that I drew:

During the project meeting, we decided to divide our tasks and I'm asked to do the storybook from page 1 to 7, mainly on the present time before the boy went back to the past. After we have done our parts, I helped to combine everything together and to add in the text to the story. One of the main problem encountered is my partner who is also the role of illustrator, he used the software photoshop while I used illustrator. When I tried to combine everything some of the thing are inconsistent and I had to make it consistent first before I can combine them together. Finally, below are our final story prototypes:

Assignment 5 - How Things Work

The task for this final assignment is to create one infographic to illustrate an article on the topic of fighting climate change. The theme 'Fighting Climate' could refer to causes and consequences of global warming, deforestation etc. To start off, I decided to brainstorm on the word 'fighting climate change', after that I tried to research on the word. Most of the research result I got back are the different ways to fight climate change. Therefore, I decided to develop my infographic on that topic. While searching for that word, I came across some picture on the sickly earth and I think it would be a good idea to include it into my infographic. Below are my initial sketches, the article of my illustration and my 1st prototype:

For this assignment, we are also required to apply one or more principles of art/design. I think I had used harmonious in shape and size (the smaller circles), emphasis through contrast (the earth is slightly larger than the other circles) and symmetrical balance on the 1st tip (the picture on the adjust your thermostat).

The feedback I got from my classmates is that they find my infographic is a bit too scattered and they can't read it easily because of the green word. Some of them suggest me to draw a house and try to put or link my information to it since most of my information happened in a house.

I listened to their suggestion and came out with a 2nd design. For this design, I did some research on infographic and looked at some examples. After all the research and examples, I came out with the final prototype.

Due to the limitation of the size, I decided to do only six out of the ten tips. The bottom colored circle correspond to the colored circle on top. For example, the red circle at the bottom on the tree means plant a tree shown on the top. The principles of art/design I think I had used are harmonious in color (the color on the bottom match the color on top), emphasis through contrast (the house is square and is larger than the other shapes) and symmetrical balance on the 1st tip (the picture on the adjust your thermostat). Below are the prototype:

Class Exercise E (Talking Forms)

The requirement for this class exercise is as follows: Pick 2 words from the list and use basic elements (dot, line, shape…) to create 2 abstract / semi‐abstract images conveying meaning of these words (1 image per word). I'm from DW2 while my partner is from DW5. We had decided to choose the words 'pause' and 'weak'. I think our design is relatively simple to understand by the reader. Below are the list and my drawing for this exercise:

Assignment 4 - Color Coalition

This assignment require us to design one postcard (both front and back) to promote, or create awareness of a chosen youth theme. The theme can be international, regional or local. I had decided to choose the theme Singapore Youth Olympics Games 2010. For this assignment, I came out with 3 different designs. For the 1st design, I decided to use words only with no drawing because during that time I had no idea what can I draw. Below are my color scheme and the back design:

The feedback I got from my classmate is they suggest that I can try to draw it out and make it look like a crossword puzzle. However, I find that this design looked too simple therefore I wanted to come out with a 2nd design. My idea for the 2nd design is to draw out one of the sports played in the games and I decided to choose archery. Below are my 2nd design and the back design:

I showed this design to my tutor during the consultation and we both find that the back design looked nicer than the front. My tutor suggest me to include the back design to the front, probably I can change the archery target board to my back design. In the end, due to the reason that I still find my front design look a bit too simple, I decided to change the 2nd design of my postcard front entirely but still include the back design to my front.

The idea for my 3rd design is that I wanted my postcard to look cool and colorful therefore I used many different colors in my design. I also took the idea from my 2nd design however I only draw out some of the balls used in the games. Below are my 3rd design color scheme and the chosen postcard front and is the final design that I had included in my portfolio (the postcard back is similar to the 2nd design):

Class Exercise D (Photo Compositions)

At the end of lecture 5, we are supposed to do class exercise c which required us to make photo compositions. Due to the reason that I can't find a subject in the lecture hall, I took the photos at home. The following are my photo shots:

Long shot: The purpose of this shot is to tell the audience where the subject is taking place. Although it is a long shot, the subject is placed at the center therefore it still have the center of attraction.

Mid shot: The purpose of this shot is to close up on the subject. The audience can roughly see the design inside the clock and the time.

Close up: The purpose of this shot is to give the audience a detailed view of the subject. The audience can clearly see the pattern in the clock and the time. They can even see the clock's second hand and the alarm hand.

High angle: A high angle shot makes the subject looked insignificant. Although the clock is at the center of the picture, it does not attract me much.

Eye-level: The subject of an eye‐level shot is fairly neutral.

Low angle: A low angle shot add strength to a picture or to emphasize certain elements within the picture. The audience may find the subject looked respected or powerful.

Assignment 3 - U C what I C

The task for this assignment is to create one sequence of images comprises between 6‐9 photographs that tells a linear photo narrative. Since I liked to watch horror movies, I would like to develop the photo narrative along that line. In the end, I decided to create a story similar to the movie 'One Missed Call'. I came out with 2 storyboards but both of the storyline are quite similar to each other. Below are my storyboard sketches:

The storyboard that I had selected is storyboard 2, The plot of my story is as follow: One day, there is this girl she picked up an unknown hand phone and decided to bring it home. Suddenly that hand phone ring and it is calling from herself. She find it weird therefore she never answer. However not long after, she received an mms. The mms showed how she died and the date showed is a few days later. In the end, this girl really died. What is shown on the hand phone became true.

During the photo taking, I encountered some problems. For the dying part, I don't know how should I show it. Should I show I'm being stab by a knife or hang by a rope? Finally I decided to show I'm being drown in a bathtub. I went to shoot in my friend's house since she have a bathtub at home. When we are in the bathroom to shoot that scene, I find it so hard to shoot it nicely. It is because to make it look real, my whole head have to be immersed into the water, which make me hard to breathe and some more I have to look natural. Therefore, I tell my friend to capture that scene fast because I can only be in the water a few seconds. However, sometime due to only that short period my friend cannot manage to shoot it nicely and I have to go into the water many times. Here are my final prototypes :

Lastly, I would like to thanks my friends who give me ideas and help me with the photo taking. <3

Class Exercise C (Indexic or Iconic)

For this class exercise, we are asked to select an object and try to create iconic and indexic representations of the object. Iconic is the resemblance of the object while indexic is the existential connection of the object. My group decided to choose car as the object. For the iconic part, we can easily draw it out. However, for the indexic part we are not sure what can we draw to link it to car. I initially draw out a traffic light but when I showed it to the lecturer she say that can mean many type of vehicles. Therefore, I decided to change it and draw a car steering wheel instead. Below are the drawing I drew for this class assignment:

Assignment 2 - Less is More

The requirement of this assignment is to create ONE pictogram for a local site – i.e. shopping complex, school, community centre, sport hall, housing estate or national park etc. For the final submission we need process of abstraction, one final prototype and an indicator.

I came out with a few ideas for this assignment. My first idea was to do a pictogram telling bus passengers to move to the back of the bus but I gave up the idea because I found it quite hard to take a photo of the scene. My second idea was about the up arrow sign in the shopping complex. Sometime when I need to find the toilet in the mall, I followed the toilet and the up arrow sign but end up the up arrow sign is telling us the toilet is at another floor. The up arrow sign does not mean walk straight. I would get confused so I was thinking I can make a more clearer pictogram. My third idea was to create a pictogram telling MRT passengers not to lean onto the MRT grab pole when the train is crowded. I decided to choose my third idea and here is my process of abstraction:

The feedback I got for my workpiece is that most of my classmates cannot see the meaning I wants to show. They thought that the person on the right of the grab pole is holding onto the pole instead of leading on it. I think my source photo didn't communicate my meaning well, so I think I need to recapture another clearer photo.

After I had capture another clearer photo, I redo my process of abstraction. During the consultation with the tutor, I showed her my new process of abstraction as follows:

I told my tutor that I chose the 5th picture as my final pictogram. Then she give me some feedback: she suggests that I can choose the 4th picture as my final pictogram because she say it look quite different from the normal pictogram. She also says that I can add more details to the 3rd picture and make my currently 3rd picture as my 4th picture.

After listening to her comments, I edited the necessary things. I also changed the hand holding the pole because I find my previous drawing of the hand don't really look like it had problem holding the pole. Here is my final process of abstraction and the final pictogram:

Class Exercise B (Constructive Criticism Model)

For this class exercise, we need to apply constructive criticism model in evaluating a design/artwork. I choose the picture given during the lecture. Here is the picture:

A constructive model for critique include the following:
- Description: I saw a blue guy in a forest.
- Analysis: The title of the movie is at the top left hand corner, the MacDonald symbol is at the top right, the main subject of the movie is placed at the center and finally all the other details are placed at the bottom. I think the way the things are presented is similar to a movie poster.
- Interpretation: When I saw this picture, I would think that this movie is probably belong to science fiction because human cannot be all blue and with such a long ears.
- Judgment: My first impression on this piece was the character looked a bit fake. I don't think the character matched with the background because it looked copy and paste to me. I found the character's eyes looked a bit weird. I think the success of this piece can be this character looked friendly enough to attract small children.
